“Born into Brothels” won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature at the 77th Academy Awards in Los Angeles Sunday. The film by Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski took an unflinching look at the rough lives of children growing up in Calcutta’s red light district — and Briski’s attempt to lead them into better lives by teaching them photography. It won the Oscar out of a field of contenders that included the heavily favored commercial hit “Super Size Me” by filmmaker Morgan Spurlock. “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which set box-office records for a documentary, was not nominated, because director Michael Moore withheld it from contention for the documentar Oscar. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
