Bottom Dollar officials hope to open the discount grocery chain's new Homestead location on Labor Day, borough Councilman Lloyd Cunningham said on Thursday night.
“The new building is halfway up,” he said.
The store will measure 18,383 square feet and will be located at 127 E. Seventh Ave. site of the now-demolished Bev-O-Matic buildings.
Entrances will be on Amity Street and Sixth and Seventh avenues. A large parking lot is planned on the 1.7-acre site.
Mayor Betty Esper commended Barrett Elementary teachers Sue Wilder, Carole Policastro and Jonette Bost for their actions during a fire on April 2 at a house at 204 E. Twelfth Ave. near the school. Wilder and Policastro ran into the burning home because they thought someone might have been inside.
Bost comforted the home's residents, a second-grade student and his family, and gave them gift cards.
Council designated Homestead a Pennsylvania Trail Town.
Cunningham said that will enable the borough to capitalize on the marketing already going on for the Great Allegheny Passage. He said Homestead will be listed on all literature as a trail town.
Councilors approved a Comcast franchise agreement that borough manager Ian McMeans said updates the service contract with the cable company.
McMeans said street sweeping will occur the last two Thursdays of every month until October, beginning April 18 and 26.
McMeans said Fifth Third Bank is scheduled to open soon in the 100 block of W. Eighth Ave.
