Bowie provides offensive spark for Brentwood boys basketball team
Dorian Bowie recently was named first-team All-Black Hills Conference at wide receiver.
The Brentwood junior celebrated by scoring a career-high 32 points for the Spartans' basketball team last week at home against Fort Cherry.
Bowie, a 6-foot-1 guard, led the Spartans to a 59-45 win in the Section 3-AA opener for both teams.
“He's flourishing. He's really accepted his role as team leader and scorer,” Dave Mislan, Brentwood's coach, said. “Nobody works harder. It's really neat to watch him grow.”
Brentwood trailed only once early against the Rangers.
But thanks to “D-Bow's” 17 first-half points, the home side secured comfortable 15-8 and 31-20 leads in the first two quarters.
Overall, Bowie connected six times from beyond the arc and sparked the Spartans to a 22-point advantage late in the contest.
Bowie, who peppered in 26 points in an earlier game against South Park, was joined in Brentwood's starting lineup by senior guards Pat Carr and Sean McGlaughlin, and sophomore forwards DeAngelo Brisco and Tanner Wells.
Carr and McGlaughlin also were first-team all-conference selections in football, at running back and punter; as was offensive lineman Dan Stiefvater, a reserve forward on the basketball team.
Earl Simmons, a junior linebacker, was a second-team all-conference pick.
Brisco, who stands 6 feet, finished with 10 points against Fort Cherry and was a force on the boards.
Wells, sophomore forward Shane Yarsky, sophomore guard Connor Sullivan and McGaughlin rounded out the Brentwood scoring.
“Brisco, Wells and Yarsky are only going to get better,” Mislan said. “DeAngelo spreads out like he's 6-5.”
The sophomore class dominates Brentwood's varsity basketball roster this season.
“We only have a couple of seniors and a couple of juniors. On our 15-man roster, we have eight sophomores,” Mislan said. “We have a lot of good, young players who are still learning.
“This sophomore class is one of the best group of players I've ever coached at Brentwood. It's a really good group. Everything that happens is a new experience for them. It's a grueling (learning) process, but they welcome it with open arms. And the seniors are great role models. We have a bright future.”

McGlaughlin, senior fullback Jonathan Karsh and senior wideout Dominic Wood also were named to the Black Hills Conference all-academic team.
