Boxing champ Jones keeps a promise to local trainer

If you're looking for Buzz Garnic this weekend, you'll have to go to New York's Madison Square Garden.

That's where he'll be rooting for eight-time world champion Roy Jones Jr. against unbeaten Joe Calzaghe in Saturday night's light heavyweight bout to be televised on HBO.

Jones trained the past six weeks at Garnic's Round 2 in Coal Center before leaving Sunday for New York.

It's the second time this year that one of boxing's biggest names worked out at Garnic's place.

"He trained here for his fight with Felix Trinidad in January and told me he really liked it here and would come back for his next fight," recalled Garnic. "He kept his word."

Although the 39-year-old Jones (52-4, 38 KOs) is considered the underdog, Garnic likes his chances against the 36-year-old Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs).

"He's ready to fight," said Garnic."He trained six days a week and looked great doing it."

One less job Garnic had with Jones had at camp was cooking.

"Jones is one of the few boxers who brings his own cook with him," said Garnic.

Jones has won his last three fights after suffering three of his four losses in 2004-05 to Antonio Tarver twice and Glen Johnson once.

Calzaghe, meanwhile, has been the WBO super middleweight champion since 1997.
