A Florida middle-schooler has been suspended and faces possible expulsion for threatening a teacher with a weapon -- a rubber band.

The 13-year-old student was kicked out of school for 10 days and officials will decide whether or not he will be allowed to return to Liberty Middle School, WKMG-TV, Orlando, reports.

The seventh-grader said he had the rubber band on his wrist when a teacher demanded he turn it over to her. He tossed it on her desk, he said, and was subsequently accused of threatening the teacher with a weapon.

The boy's mother said she was shocked when her son was charged with a Level 4 offense, which includes arson, assault and battery, bomb threats and explosives.

School officials refused to comment, saying the incident was under investigation.
