A Pittsburgh man who Greensburg police said stabbed his girlfriend with a screwdriver Tuesday night allegedly tried to escape custody by kicking the window out of a police cruiser.
He was already wanted in connection with another assault on the same woman, police said.
Paul Anderson, 50, of 1208 Kunkle Ave., was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment, harassment, escape and criminal mischief after the attack on Eula Williams, 38, of 314 Westminster Ave., Greensburg, police said.
City police responded to the call at Williams' home about 9:55 p.m. Tuesday. Officers found Williams on her front porch bleeding from her left arm and left leg, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in Greensburg District Justice James Albert's office.
Williams told police that Anderson stabbed her with a hex screwdriver and left the scene in her white Subaru, the affidavit stated.
Williams told police she was lying on her couch when Anderson attempted to drink a beer. When she told Anderson he couldn't drink in her house, an argument ensued, police said.
Anderson pulled out a screwdriver and began to stab Williams with it, police said. Williams threw her arms up to defend herself, and Anderson then punched her in the body several times, police said.
As officers interviewed Williams, Anderson was spotted driving on Route 119 in Youngwood.
He was eventually stopped at the intersection of Fourth and Locust streets. Police said Anderson was handcuffed and placed in the back seat of a new Greensburg patrol car when he kicked out the rear window on the driver's side and jumped from the vehicle.
Police sprayed Anderson with Mace and took him back into custody, police said.
Williams was treated at Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg, for four puncture wounds to her left arm and one puncture wound to her left leg.
A warrant for Anderson's arrest had already been issued after he failed to appear for a recent hearing on charges he punched Williams in the face earlier this year.
Anderson was charged with simple assault and harassment on Feb. 24 by Greensburg police after he allegedly punched Williams in the face after an argument at her home, an affidavit stated. He left the scene after that altercation.
Anderson was arraigned on those charges in April, and a preliminary hearing was set. He was released on his own recognizance but did not appear for the hearing before Albert.
His recognizance bond on the February charges was revoked last night after the latest arrest. On the new charges, Anderson was committed to the Westmoreland County Prison after failing to post $25,000 bond.
A preliminary hearing on all charges is scheduled before Albert on May 17.
