Westmoreland County Community College is offering make-up courses this summer for junior and senior high school students who need additional credits. Classes will be hed at Hempfield Area High School and Norwin Middle School East.
The sessions provide 60 hours of instruction per course, equivalent to one credit required by area high schools. Hempfield Area classes meet from 8 to 11 a.m. weekdays for the morning session, and 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for the afternoon session. No classes will be held July 4-6.
Morning and afternoon sessions will be held at Hempfield Area High beginning June 20 and ending July 20. Classes for students in grades 7 and 8 are English and mathematics, pre-algebra, American cultures and government, and World History. Classes for grades 9-12 are Algebra I and II, American cultures, American government, biology, English (for each grade), modern geometry, health, physical science and world cultures.
Make-up courses also will be conducted at Norwin Middle School East beginning July 3 and ending Aug. 10. Classes meet from 8 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. weekdays.
English and mathematics will be offered for students in grades 7 and 8. Classes for grades 9-12 are Algebra I and II, English (for each grade), health, physical education and modern geometry.
More information about the make-up courses is available through high school guidance offices. Before registering for any course, students should meet with their high school guidance counselors.
The cost per class is $60 tuition, plus a $10 materials fee, for Westmoreland County residents; the fee includes books. Residents of other Pennsylvania counties will be charged $90 tuition, plus a $10 materials fee. To register, call the registration center at Westmoreland County Community College at 800-262-2103.

The Norwin Elks will hold its annual Flag Day ceremony 3 p.m. Saturday at the Elks Lodge on Sandy Hill Road, Penn Township. Participants in the event will include the Armbrust veterans and Irwin/North Huntingdon VFW Post 781. The public may attend.
Free food provided by the Westmoreland County Food Bank can be picked up from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. John's United Church of Christ, Larimer; from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at Bethel A.M. Church in Irwin, and from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. Elizabeth Seton Church in North Huntingdon. Families must be registered to participate; contact the food bank or the appropriate church for details.
The Westmoreland County Chapter of the American Red Cross, in conjunction with Jeannette District Memorial Hospital, will hold a blood drive from noon to 6 p.m. Friday in the hospital's Founders Hall on Jefferson Avenue, Jeannette.
Donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh 105 pounds or more; donors must be in good health. For information about medications or eligibility, call 800-542-5663 and ask to speak with a nurse.
The Pittsburgh Youth Symphony will hold auditions for the 2001-02 season beginning Aug. 28 at Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts, 600 Penn Ave., Pittsburgh.
Advanced students of any age may apply. Each 10-minute audition will consist of a solo of the player's choice, plus scales and specific orchestral excerpts that will be mailed in advance with an audition packet.
Auditions are scheduled for violin and viola from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 28-30; for cello and bass, from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 31; for harp, percussion and piano, from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 4; for flute, from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 4; for oboe, clarinet and bassoon, 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 5; and for brass, from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 6.

The Jeannette Recreation Commission and the Jeannette Baseball Association will sponsor a trip June 22 to the new Altoona ballpark to see the Altoona Curve, the Pittsburgh Pirates' AA Minor League affiliate.
The bus will leave Altman Park between 3:30 and 4 p.m. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
Between innings of the game, the Zooperstars baseball mascots, will perform.
The cost of the bus trip and game ticket is $10 per person for city residents, $15 for others. Space is limited and will be filled as payments are made. All children under age 18 must have a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian.
