Briefs: College schedules make-up courses

Westmoreland County Community College is offering make-up courses this summer for junior and senior high school students who need additional credits. Classes will be hed at Hempfield Area High School and Norwin Middle School East.

The sessions provide 60 hours of instruction per course, equivalent to one credit required by area high schools. Hempfield Area classes meet from 8 to 11 a.m. weekdays for the morning session, and 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for the afternoon session. No classes will be held July 4-6.

Morning and afternoon sessions will be held at Hempfield Area High beginning June 20 and ending July 20. Classes for students in grades 7 and 8 are English and mathematics, pre-algebra, American cultures and government, and World History. Classes for grades 9-12 are Algebra I and II, American cultures, American government, biology, English (for each grade), modern geometry, health, physical science and world cultures.

Make-up courses also will be conducted at Norwin Middle School East beginning July 3 and ending Aug. 10. Classes meet from 8 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. weekdays.

English and mathematics will be offered for students in grades 7 and 8. Classes for grades 9-12 are Algebra I and II, English (for each grade), health, physical education and modern geometry.

More information about the make-up courses is available through high school guidance offices. Before registering for any course, students should meet with their high school guidance counselors.

The cost per class is $60 tuition, plus a $10 materials fee, for Westmoreland County residents; the fee includes books. Residents of other Pennsylvania counties will be charged $90 tuition, plus a $10 materials fee. To register, call the registration center at Westmoreland County Community College at 800-262-2103.

    The Norwin Elks will hold its annual Flag Day ceremony 3 p.m. Saturday at the Elks Lodge on Sandy Hill Road, Penn Township. Participants in the event will include the Armbrust veterans and Irwin/North Huntingdon VFW Post 781. The public may attend.

    Free food provided by the Westmoreland County Food Bank can be picked up from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. John's United Church of Christ, Larimer; from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at Bethel A.M. Church in Irwin, and from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. Elizabeth Seton Church in North Huntingdon. Families must be registered to participate; contact the food bank or the appropriate church for details.

    The Westmoreland County Chapter of the American Red Cross, in conjunction with Jeannette District Memorial Hospital, will hold a blood drive from noon to 6 p.m. Friday in the hospital's Founders Hall on Jefferson Avenue, Jeannette.

    Donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh 105 pounds or more; donors must be in good health. For information about medications or eligibility, call 800-542-5663 and ask to speak with a nurse.



    The Pittsburgh Youth Symphony will hold auditions for the 2001-02 season beginning Aug. 28 at Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts, 600 Penn Ave., Pittsburgh.

    Advanced students of any age may apply. Each 10-minute audition will consist of a solo of the player's choice, plus scales and specific orchestral excerpts that will be mailed in advance with an audition packet.

    Auditions are scheduled for violin and viola from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 28-30; for cello and bass, from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 31; for harp, percussion and piano, from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 4; for flute, from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 4; for oboe, clarinet and bassoon, 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 5; and for brass, from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 6.

    The Jeannette Recreation Commission and the Jeannette Baseball Association will sponsor a trip June 22 to the new Altoona ballpark to see the Altoona Curve, the Pittsburgh Pirates' AA Minor League affiliate.

    The bus will leave Altman Park between 3:30 and 4 p.m. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

    Between innings of the game, the Zooperstars baseball mascots, will perform.

    The cost of the bus trip and game ticket is $10 per person for city residents, $15 for others. Space is limited and will be filled as payments are made. All children under age 18 must have a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian.

  • Rick Peltier, formerly of Jeannette, has won an award for the best sports coverage in the state of Indiana. A sports anchor-reporter at WTVW-TV, Fox 7, Peltier and sports director Mark McVicar were the winners of the Associated Press Award in Best Breaking Sports Coverage for pieces about the firing of Indiana University basketball coach Bob Knight. Peltier is the son of Richard and Deborah Peltier of Jeannette.

  • Kelly Fleming of North Huntingdon Township will attend the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg this fall. The daughter of William and Denise Fleming, she graduates this month from Norwin Senior High School, where she has been active in volleyball and Ski Club. She is secretary of the Letterwinners Club and a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

  • Vincent Stephen Litterini, son of Norman and Patricia Litterini of Irwin, recently received a master's degree in experimental education from the University of New Hampshire. A member of the American Society of Training and Development, his postgraduation plans include corporate training.

  • John Bragovich of North Huntingdon has been accepted as a member of the fall 2001 freshman class at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. The son of John and Renie Bragovich, he graduates this month from Norwin Senior High School.

  • Jamie Kratochvil, daughter of Debbie Kratochvil of Manor, has been accepted to the Pennsylvania Culinary Academy for the July semester. A senior at Hempfield Area High School, she plans to major in the culinary arts and to become a master chef.

  • Erin Marie Grabowski of Jeannette recently graduated from the Pittsburgh Beauty Academy of Greensburg. She is the daughter of William J. Grabowski. A graduate of Norwin Senior High School, she is employed by Artisan Colour Spa in Murrysville.

  • Hillary Peltier, daughter of Richard and Deborah Peltier of Jeannette, has been named to the dean's list at the University of Michigan. Peltier, who achieved a 4.0 grade point average, also has been awarded a Gomberg Fellowship for research in organic synthesis or heterocycles. The research will be conducted under the direction of Dr. Leroy Townsend.

  • John Simpson of Irwin has graduated summa cum laude from Mt. Union College with a bachelor's degree in psychology. Erin Peters of Harrison City also graduated from the college cum laude, with a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

  • Jane Zowacki of West Newton earned a 'best in show' award for the quilt she created for the 2001 West Overton Quilt Show. She also won a first-place award for a challenge quilt she sewed. There were a total of 58 quilts in the competition.

  • Kurt Hoch of Irwin, a senior mechanical engineering major at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, recently earned the 'Sarge' Kearns award as the most outstanding cadet in the school's ROTC program. Hoch is the son of James and Melitta Hoch.

  • Michael C. Wielobob of North Huntingdon recently earned a master's degree in occupational therapy from St. Francis University in Loretto, Cambria County. Earning bachelor's degrees at the May commencement ceremony were Jennifer M. Gross of North Huntingdon, Steven C. Petrosky of Herminie and Nicole A. Chicklo of Jeannette.

  • Jacki Geary-Silberman of North Huntingdon has joined the Norwin office of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services as a sales associate. Previously, she worked as a nail technician for 11 years at Elegant Details and was a student at the Pittsburgh Filmmakers School of Photography.

  • Jill Compton was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Slippery Rock University. The sophomore is a graduate of Jeannette High School.

  • Marla Yates of North Huntingdon has been named to the spring semester dean's list at Lycoming College of Pennsylvania. She is majoring in biology.
