Spring trends for color and style

InStyle magazine recommends color and style items for spring trends.

The color: Pastel . Subdued shades offer an alternative to bold jewel tones and shocking fluorescents, sweetening spring's soft, feminine palette.

The bag: Basket weave . Wicker, raffia and other woven materials got a high-fashion reboot on the runways of Emilio Pucci, Jil Sander and Proenza Schouler, courtesy of sleek, trim sizes.

The skirt: Pleated . Get ready to enter the fold in pieces with lots of tucks.

The silhouette: Hourglass . Want a shape that's equal parts chic and come-hither• It's a cinch! Defining the waist puts you ahead of the curve.

The shoe: Pencil heel . The skinny stiletto has returned. Givenchy has one that tipped in metal, while Calvin Klein has a platform for women who've grown addicted to a multi-inch boost.

Pieces to flatter

People Style Watch offers six universally flattering pieces. These are easy but polished items that are great for work -- and they work on everyone.

Pencil skirt : The tapered fit skims your shape without being too tight, and a matte chambray slims.

Sleek wedges : Choose a neutral color which will be super versatile, and an almond toe and low vamp lengthens legs.

Collared shirt : Go with one with an understated ruffle which flatters all busts without overwhelming.

White pants : Flared legs lengthen your lower half, and a light, loose-fitting fabric accommodates hips and thighs.

Statement necklace: Go for one that has gold detailing and pale stones which will complement all skin tones, and make sure the chain adjusts to your perfect length.

Faux leather jacket : If it has clean lines, a tailored fit and is buttonless, it suits any figure.
