Briefs: Redgate Road to be closed through October

Redgate Road in Aleppo Township and Haysville is closed through October for the installation of sewer lines, according to officials from PennDOT District 11.

Crews were scheduled to begin installing new lines Wednesday on Redgate between Route 65 and Merriman Road.

Signs will be posted to guide motorists around the closure using Route 65 to Kilbuck Street to Deer Run Road.

PennDOT advises motorists to allow extra time and expect changing patterns and delays when traveling through the area.

Motorists can visit www.511pa.com or call 511 to check traffic conditions on most major roadways.

Bell Acres picnic

The 19th annual Bell Acres Community Day Picnic will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Big Sewickley Creek Fire Hall and borough park.

The picnic, which is open to all Bell Acres residents and their families, will feature picnic food, including chicken, hot dogs, salad and corn on the cob. Face painting and door prizes also will be featured. The event is free.

Back 2 School

Donations will be accepted through Sunday for the Back 2 School Boutique at St. Stephen's Church, 405 Frederick Ave., Sewickley.

Side by Side ministry is collecting new or gently used clothing in sizes 6X and larger for children and teens. Clothes and other school supplies can be dropped off at the church or at Mak Studio, 431 Beaver St., Sewickley.

PEO Scholarship

Philanthropic Education Organization, or PEO, Chapter BN of Sewickley is seeking outstanding young women who are seniors in high school to apply for the Star Scholarship.

The scholarship provides a one-time, $2,500 award to female high school seniors who wish to pursue post-secondary education.

Recipients must exhibit excellence in each of the following areas: academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, extra curricular involvement, community-volunteer service and potential for future success.

Family campfire

Fern Hollow Nature Center in Sewickley Heights is hosting a family campfire from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Participants are invited to sing songs, eat gourmet s'mores and participate in stargazing.

Admission is $15 per family for members or $25 per family for nonmembers.

Open house

Montessori Children's Community in Sewickley will host an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 26 at its location on Chadwick Street. For more information, call 412-741-8992 or visit www.montessorichildrenscommunity.org.
