Briefs: Talk looks at sustainability for survival

Cameron Sinclair, co-founder of a group the seeks architectural solutions to humanitarian crises, will speak on sustainability and survival Thursday in the South Side.

Sinclair's "When Sustainability is a Matter of Survival" is the keynote talk at the Design Dialogue Series sponsored by La Roche College in McCandless and its Interior Design Advisory Board.

He is a co-founder of Architecture for Humanity, which has worked in 26 countries on projects ranging from schools and health clinics to affordable housing and long-term sustainable reconstruction. He and co-founder Kate Stohr have compiled a compendium on socially conscious design and received an award in 2006 for their work responding to housing needs after Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf of Mexico area.

The talk will begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the IBEW Lecture Hall. Admission is $30; $15 for students. Details: 412-536-1024.

Daffodil, lily sale set

Get ready for fall planting with the annual Daffodil and Lily Sale and Auction from 1 to 5 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of South Hills.

The event, sponsored by the Daffodil and Hosta Society of Western Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic Lily Society, will feature bulbs for all types and color of daffodils and numerous varieties of Asiatic, Orienpet, Trumpet and Oriental lily bulbs.

Experts will be available to discuss daffodils and lilies.

The church is located at 1240 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon.
