Match boots with the right skirt
Lucky magazine helps solve the boot-height/skirt-length conundrum with this advice:
Mid-calf boots : Chose kirts with clean, sharp lines.
Knee-high boots : Skirts should fall above or below the knee. As long as the boots don’t align with the hem, you’re all good.
Over-the-knee boots : Keep it short. Wearing anything that covers most of the boot is like, what’s the point?
Mishaps don’t spell the end
Lucky magazine offers these stain-busting and mending tips:
Holes are not the end . They can be rewoven or concealed with a dart. “The piece may go down a size, but it’s saved,” says Kristina Franco who owns The Allen Company, an online-vintage resource company.
Launder gently . “I’ve soaked pieces for up to two weeks,” says Franco, who treats sturdier cottons with Palmolive and a pinch of Oxi Clean first.
Get the sweat out . Deo-Go is brilliant at getting rid of stains from deodorant and sweat. Honest. We tried it — and it actually worked! ($11, getdeogo.com).
Thread a needle . Don’t have a sewing machine⢠Simple hems are easy to stitch by hand, and no one will be the wiser (plus, they’re free!).
Metallic makeup magic
Allure magazine offers tips from makeup artists on how to make metallic shades work for makeup.
Pick the right colors . Golds and bronzes work best for everybody. If you have fair skin, coppers are fine as long as you aren’t very rosy or prone to flushing. The darker your skin, the more intense your metallic makeup should be.
Warm up your complexion . Dust bronzer along the cheekbones to create a balance between your skin and the rest of your makeup. A copper or beige blush with a hint of shimmer will also do the trick.
Create a good base on lids . Prep eyelids with foundation or concealer to “help the shadows stick and keep them from looking really rich.
Blending is key . Mix and match metallics, but make sure to blend them properly, which means softening all the edges with a small shadow brush. Sculpt your eyes with two, three or even four shades, but they have to look like a shimmering unity, not like four separate shades having a fight.
Tone it down . Choose cream formulas, which are more subtle than powder ones, a which highlight skin imperfections. Iridescent cream reflects light.
Try a honey-colored lip gloss . A sheer honey gloss with golden shimmer helps enliven your lips when wearing coppers and bronzes on other features.
