In an annual corporate report the BBC criticizes its own sitcoms as too “safe, white and middle class,” it was reported Wednesday. The report urges BBC1 to come up with more diverse programming, the Daily Mail said. BBC governors said when compared with their U.S. counterparts, British TV comedies fail miserably. ” … Our review found some evidence of a legacy of dissatisfaction with BBC1 sitcoms seen as ‘too focused on middle class suburbia’ and which compared poorly with sophisticated U.S. imports,” the report said. However, the report hailed the show, “Little Britain,” which recently moved from BBC3 to BBC1. BBC Chairman Michael Grade told reporters he agrees with the assessment, but warned not to forget there are still “rich pickings (for comedy) in middle class, white suburbia.” © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
