While we Americans go from one political scandal to another, our British cousins are doing their best to catch up.

Nearly 200 members of the British Parliament are charged with gross abuses of a “second home allowance.” How big is the allowance• Depends upon the size of the moat.

That’s right. Anglo-chutzpah was in evidence with a member who charged for the cleaning of his moat. Moat-Gate!

Another member charged the government for a shipment of horse manure for his garden. You might say the horses were active participants in British supply-side economics.

One politician claimed 1,600 pounds for “a miniature duck house” adjacent to his sprawling mansion. All of which suggests that our own Sen. Ted Stevens had no imagination at all.

Mark Russell is a syndicated satirist.
