LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 132nd running of the Kentucky Derby could turn out a lot like Wednesday's post draw - spread out and wide open. In front of a crowded downtown Louisville festival, a full field of 20 drew their positions for a Triple Crown race that features no clear-cut favorite and a host of deep long shots. "We're in it now," three-time Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert said. "There's nothing we can do about it." The Derby draw was held outdoors for the first time, moving from the confines of the Churchill Downs museum at the famed track. Santa Anita winner Brother Derek, who will leave from the No. 18 post, was installed as the 3-to-1 morning line favorite by Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia. Arkansas Derby winner Lawyer Ron, next door to Brother Derek in the No. 17 post, and undefeated Barbaro are the co-second choices at 4-1. Even trainer Dan Hendricks, whose Brother Derek settled for the No. 18 post, felt his horse didn't deserve to be the lone favorite. "Barbaro is 4-1?" Hendrick asked. "I think they both deserved top billing. Barbaro is undefeated. I don't know what I did, but I got myself beat twice." Sweetnorthernsaint, who won the Illinois Derby by nine lengths, is the fourth choice at 10-1. How deep is the field⢠All three of Bob Baffert's highly regarded horses - Wood Memorial winner Bob and John, Santa Anita Derby runner-up Point Determined and Blue Grass Stakes winner Sinister Minister -- are 12-1. If they all make it to the gate, it will be only the second time in 22 years -- and the second year in a row -- that 20 horses ran in the Derby. "We'll see what happens," said trainer Todd Pletcher, who will saddle long shots Bluegrass Cat and Keyed Entry in his bid for an elusive Derby victory. John Shirreffs picked post No. 10 for A.P. Warrior, the same spot from which his 50-1 longshot Giacomo won last year's Derby. Hendricks, paralyzed from the waist down in a motocross accident two years ago, was the 16th trainer to pick his spot. Brother Derek is his first Derby horse. "I heard it was 16, and I thought it was the end of the world," he said. "To get to this point, and hear that ... it kind of upset me. But by the time I got back to the barn, I thought 'How can I complain about being in the Kentucky Derby and complain about my post?' " Two horses with early speed -- Keyed Entry and Sinister Minister -- will leave the gate side-by-side at post Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. Likewise for Brother Derek and Lawyer Ron. Baffert said the post position is not as important as the proximity to other horses. "The main thing is who you are next to," he said. "You really don't want to draw (two horses) next to each other that have the same style." Kentucky Derby field Favorite Brother Derek will start from the far outside with the No. 18 post position.
