HOUSTON - The Pirates today placed reliever Salomon Torres on the 15-day disabled list and called up right-hander Romulo Sanchez from Class AA Altoona.

Torres has tightness and pain in his right elbow, and has not pitched since Monday. Torres experienced similar pain in June and spent time on the DL.

“It's been feeling bad the last three days,” Torres said after Friday's game against the Houston Astros. “It's the same spot as before, but not as bad.”

In 40 games for Altoona, Sanchez went 6-3 with one save and a 2.81 ERA.

"He's performed very well," general manager Dave Littlefield said. "He's commanding his pitches, throwing hard. We think he's the best guy (to promote)."

Sanchez, 23, has no previous major league experience. He was signed as a minor-league free agent in 2004 after spending two seasons on the Los Angeles Dodgers' rookie league team.
