CHICAGO — Manager Lloyd McClendon’s entire coaching staff was invited to return for the 2004 season.
General manager Dave Littlefield extended the offer Saturday afternoon before the Pirates played a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs.
“It’s a decision Mac and I were involved in, and overall, we felt these guys did a nice job as a whole to help improve the team,” Littlefield said. “We think they will help us get better next year.”
Pitching coach Spin Williams and bullpen coach Bruce Tanner have been with McClendon since his first season in 2001. Hitting coach Gerald Perry, first base coach Rusty Kuntz, third base coach John Russell, bench coach Pete Mackanin and infielder instructor Alvaro Espinosa are completing their first year on McClendon’s staff.
Perry and Kuntz already had contracts for a second season. The other coaches had one-year deals. After the season ends today, Littlefield will begin negotiations with Russell, Mackanin, Williams, Tanner and Espinoza.
