Bullskin VFC to hold discount foods fundraiser
The Bullskin Township Volunteer Fire Company is hoping to help the community as well as the department with an upcoming fundraiser.
On Dec. 10, the Bullskin VFC will hold a discount foods fundraiser in its fire hall at 260 Keefer Road, Connellsville. The doors open at 10 a.m. Products will be sold beginning at 11 a.m.
Company President Brad Gillott said he heard of the idea from a co-worker whose father-in-law has a wholesale foods warehouse in Greensburg and teamed with a fire department in Armstrong County.
“He wanted to spread out to other departments, and I thought this would be a way for us to make some money and at the same time maybe even help out the community,” Gillott said.
“With the economy the way it is, and especially around the holiday season, this is a way for the community to get food at a much lower price than they would get at the store,” he added.
Items for sale will include hams and various meats, frozen food, fresh dairy products, potatoes and more.
Gillott said a half-gallon of orange juice that costs $3 in the grocery store would cost approximately $1 at the sale.
All of the products will be coming from Ray’s Meats in Greensburg.
The department hopes to make it a monthly event, but if it becomes very popular, they won’t have a problem doing it every two weeks.
For the first sale, Gillott said they would probably start with a smaller truckload of items.
Participants are seated at tables and, once the sale begins, one kind of food item at a time will be brought to the table.
“If you are interested in that item, you just raise your hand and we (the firemen) will bring the item to you and you will give us the money,” Gillott said.
The sale will continue in that fashion until all the food is gone.
Gillott said they don’t have to worry about competing with other area fire departments because the owner of Ray’s Meats chose departments at least 20 miles away from other participating departments.
Gillott is hoping the response will be good enough to keep the fundraiser going for a very long time.
