Bus carrying Ky. middle-school students catches fire in Washington County
Kentucky middle school students and adults returning from a field trip to the nation's capital scrambled to safety Thursday morning when the rear of their tour bus burst into flames on I-70 westbound in Washington County.
No one was injured.
The charter bus was transporting about 50 eighth-graders and five parents to Oldham County Middle School in La Grange, Ky. The driver noticed smoke about 6:30 a.m., pulled over on the interstate near the West Virginia line and evacuated the bus, according to district spokeswoman Tracy Green.
Westbound traffic was temporarily diverted off the interstate while firefighters extinguished the fire, which burned the back third of the bus to its shell. The lanes reopened before 11 a.m.
The students were coming back from an annual field trip to Washington and New York City, Green said. They were picked up by local school buses and taken to a nearby rest stop, where they were picked up by a new charter bus, she said.
