Federal education officials have revoked an invitation for a PBS kids show producer to speak at a children's TV conference, the Los Angeles Times said Friday.
Citing a report in the trade magazine Broadcasting & Cable, the paper said the U.S. Department of Education withdrew the invitation for "Postcards from Buster" producer Carol Greenwald to speak at a meeting in Baltimore. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings recently complained about an episode of the show that depicted a lesbian couple as part of its storyline.
"Postcards from Buster" follows the travels of an animated bunny named Buster as he visits with a variety of different kinds of American families.
Broadcasting & Cable said it had been told by officials at PBS and WGBH-TV, the Boston station that produces "Postcards From Buster," that Greenwald was "disinvited" from addressing the meeting, sponsored by PBS and the Department of Education.
PBS has said it would not distribute the episode in question, but WGBH said it would make it available to other public TV stations. At least two dozen stations planned to air the episode in the series' regular 2 p.m. time slot Tuesday.
