The high school wrestling season officially kicked off yesterday, as winter sports were cleared to hold their first practices in preparation for the upcoming season. But on the college scene, several schools have already managed to get their grapplers on the mat in some preseason tournaments. At Waynesburg College, Connellsville graduate Brian Wolfe started the season on a positive note. Wolfe won a couple of matches before settling for fourth place in the heavyweight division at the Messiah Invitational, held at Messiah College. Wolfe helped Waynesburg finish with a team total of 37.5 points, good enough for seventh place. = Staying at Waynesburg College, the Yellow Jackets continue to dominate on the gridiron. Waynesburg improved its record to 8-1 on the season by beating host Frostburg State 28-7 on Saturday. In that game, Connellsville graduate Ben Popson kicked all four extra points. Waynesburg College will be gunning for the Presidents Athletic Conference championship this Saturday when it hosts Westminster. = Speaking of Westminster, the school recently held its annual Titan Relay swim carnival. At the event, Laurel Highlands graduate Sara Bonchosky was a part of the winning women's 300 butterfly relay. Bonchosky, along with teammates Amy Wirtz and Brittany Jardine, took top honors with a time of 3:07. = Also making waves in the pool is Southmoreland graduate Ashley Yelinek. Yelinek was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team as Bloomsburg topped Mansfield 109-74. Yelinek, along with teammates Laura Jeffers, Courtney Dean and Jenn Shank, teamed up for a winning time of 1:58.24. = In soccer action, Thiel College closed out its PAC schedule in style with a 2-0 triumph over Waynesburg. In that game, junior midfielder and Mount Pleasant graduate Eric Hauser scored both goals for the Tomcats. The first goal was unassisted. The second came off a deflection off a corner kick. = At last check, Slippery Rock University football players Louis Jamison, Kevin Johnston and Bill Ricks have been performing well. Jamison, a Southmoreland graduate, is among the team leaders in tackles. He has also sprinkled in a couple of fumble recoveries and three blocked kicks. Connellsville graduate Johnston was second on the team in tackles. He also has three interceptions, a couple of pass deflections, and is a dangerous threat on kick returns. Meanwhile, Ricks has been steady along the offensive line at his center position.
