CAHS picks up wins in baseball and tennis
Chris Pepe cracked a two-run double in the sixth and had an RBI single in the third as the Falcons topped host Laurel Highlands in Section 2-AAA action. Kevin Bell picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly and a drove in another one after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Wes Hughes connected on an RBI single.
Travis Henry pitched a complete game and struck out five while giving up five hits and walking four.
Brian Lipchinsky singled in a run for the Mustangs. Bobby Madison struck out two and took the loss.
Laurel Highlands (2-8, 4-11) host Brownsville on Saturday. Connellsville (5-6, 8-10) make a trip to Derry on Monday.
Derry 13, SHS 4
Erik Adams hit a double and single, but Southmoreland fell at Derry. Shane Datz, Zach Lambing, Nathan Vandyke and Tony Mains also doubled for the Scotties. Mike Mardis took the loss.
Southmoreland (2-8, 3-10) will host Yough on Monday.
CAHS 3, Latrobe 2
Tyler Weisel defeated Josh Martin 6-2, 6-1 at first singles to give host Latrobe the early lead, but Connellsville bounced back to post the victory. Gene Cunningham evened things up with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 second-singles win over Jeff Ward, and Nathan Pritts downed Joe Steiner 6-0, 6-1 at third singles to put the Falcons ahead.
The Wildcats also took the first doubles match, with Zach Bastin and Matt Walker beating Scott Campbell and Troy Smith 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Wade Schnorr and Nate Romesburg clinched Connellsville’s victory with a 6-4, 6-3 second-doubles win against Mike Steiner and Dexter Edwards.
The Falcons (13-3) will visit Greensburg Central Catholic today.
