CALIFORNIA - California University women's basketball coach Darcie Vincent has lost only six of 100 games at Hamer Hall.
None of the half dozen defeats, however, left a worst taste in her mouth than Tuesday's 55-48 setback to Millersville.
"We're not a good team," started Vincent after the Vulcans' third home loss in 85 games dating back to 2001. "This team hasn't come out to the standard at California and accomplished anything.
"I'm embarrassd," she went on. "No one should have to pay $5 to see us play. We stink."
Vincent had plenty of reasons to be burning after the Vulcans' 32-game regular season winning streak against PSAC East teams came to an end.
There were the 33 turnovers including 18 in the second half.
There were the 30 fouls and four players fouling out.
There was California blowing a 14-point lead early in the second half.
There was Cal being outscored 20-4 in a seven-minute span of the second half.
While the Vulcans (6-3) weren't looking good, neither was Millersville (6-2), which had 29 turnovers and missed 34 of 52 shots from the floor incliuding all eight of its 3-pointers.
The Lady Marauders were down 25-17 at halftime and 31-17 with a little over two minutes gone in the second half before starting their comeback.
Ashley Romanosky (10) and reserve Kari Cover (9) combined for 19 points following intermission as Millersville outscored Cal, 38-23, in the second half.
"We played with a lot of heart and passion," said 17th year Millersville coach Mary Fleig, whose team won for the first time in 11 tries at Hamer Hall. "Cal is hurting and down with injuries but this is big win for us just because they're Cal."
Kim Nowakoski looked best for the Vulcans with 15 points and six rebounds before fouling out with three minutes remaininmg.
As far as Vincent is concerned, Nowakowski doesn't have a strong supporting cast.
"We don't have a guard to rely on," she said. "The 13-day layoff should have been beneficial to us but the bottom line is we're not very good. I'm afraid of what will happen tomorrow night when we play West Chester."
