A California University of Pennsylvania student was killed when her vehicle collided with a dump truck shortly before noon Wednesday near Adamson Stadium on the campus.
Kaly Bilski, 19, of Belle Vernon was pronounced dead about 1:30 p.m. at Mon Valley Hospital, Carroll Township, according to the Washington County Coroner's office.
Tracy Hudak-Vitale, acting California Borough police chief, said Bilski was pulling onto Route 88 and traveled into the path of a dump truck, which was traveling south. The truck driver attempted to avoid the collision, but struck the victim's vehicle on the driver's side, police said.
Bilski was alone in the vehicle.
"That's exactly what it is -- a terrible tragedy," Hudak-Vitale said.
Bilski was a freshman secondary education/English major.
"The California University community is deeply saddened by this tragic loss," said university spokeswoman Christine Kindl. "It is heart-breaking to lose such a young and promising student. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kaly's family, friends and classmates."
Counselors will be available at Vulcan Village, an off-campus university housing complex where Bilski lived, and at the counseling center on campus, Kindl said.
