About 9,000 registered nurses are planning a one-day strike next week against the University of California.

The strike, set by the California Nurses Association for next Thursday, will affect large UC medical centers in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, San Diego, San Francisco, Davis and Irvine, and student health centers in Riverside, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and Berkeley.

The union is opposed to the university's plan to privatize nurses' pensions as a cost-cutting measure, as well as proposed staffing cuts.

Numerous state agencies are under pressure to cut costs so California's budget can be balanced.
