California, Yough face important games
The section season ends Friday.
And there will be plenty at stake for California and Yough High's basketball teams.
California (11-9, 8-3) will be hosting Geibel (14-4, 8-3) with the Sec. 2 title on the line while Yough (12-10, 8-5) needs a win at Derry Area (7-15, 4-9) to clinch a playoff spot and can finish as high as second in Class AAA's Sec. 3.
CALIFORNIA
Shane Tonkavitch scored a game-high 18 points to lead California to a 57-50 win over visiting Mapletown.
The Trojans jumped out to a 19-6 first quarter lead and took a 41-36 advantage into the final eight minutes.
Dan DeMoss backed Tonkavitch with 13 points.
GEIBEL
Geibel created a three-way tie at the top of Sec. 2 by rallying in the second half to beat visiting Clairton, 54-49.
Trailing 28-21 at halftime, the Gators outscored the Bears. 33-21, in the final 16 minutes.
The trio of John Bokat (16), Jordan White (15) and Chris Cox (14) combined for 45 points for the Gators, who've won six straight.
California, Geibel and Clairton are deadlocked for first place.
Clairton is home with last-place Avella (5-17, 1-10) Friday.
YOUGH
Yough kept its playoff hopes alive with a 70-63 win over visiting Brownsville to avenge a 91-80 loss last week.
The Cougars outscored the Falcons, 25-18, in the last eight minutes.
