The offensive lineman saw a spine specialist last week and found out that a fracture of the sixth cervical vertebra was too severe for him to continue participating in contact sports.
“I was really sad,” Woodland Hills coach George Novak said. “He really enjoyed football and had a lot of fun. I talked with him about it. What a mature young man he is. He realized it's not the end of the world.”
Penn State coach Joe Paterno said during his press conference Tuesday that Borgoyn would still be involved in the program, though he will not count against the team's 85 scholarships.
"If he can't play, you don't have to count him, but we are certainly not going to take his aid away from him," Paterno said. "We are allowed to make him a student coach so he can go out on the field and hold cards up. He is with the program. That is a tremendous factor in a kid's life, to all of a sudden be waking up every morning and thinking about football and now it is completely out of your life. That is not easy unless it is a voluntary thing.
"He has really been a dedicated kid. He would have been a good football player."
The Deer Lakes High School graduate threw for 277 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in only his second collegiate start. For the season, he has 42 completions in 72 attempts for 507 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
HOCKEY
The Deer Lakes graduate scored the game-winner in the 4-3 victory over Pitt-Johnstown, then contributed a goal and an assist in a 4-2 win over Edinboro.
TRACK & FIELD
IUP won the team regional title. Raschiatore and her team will compete in the NCAA championships Nov. 23 in Ashland, Ohio.
