The final two spellers Rohan Rajeev, 14, from Edmond, Okla., and Ananya Vinay, 12, from Fresno, Calif., right, applaud during the finals of the 90th Scripps National Spelling Bee, in Oxon Hill, Md., Thursday, June 1, 2017.
Ananya Vinay, 12, earned herself more than $40,000 in cash and prizes. The sixth-grader outclassed her better-known competitors and survived a long duel with 14-year-old Rohan Rajeev to win the 90th Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday.

291 spellers took the Preliminaries Test. Could you have passed?
