Canon-Mac hoping it's found the right Guy

Canon-McMillan may have found the Guy that can lead them to a championship.

After 23 seasons at Class AA Washington, Guy Montecalvo takes over the Big Macs. Despite reaching the postseason each of the last three years, the program has yet to win a WPIAL playoff game. The veteran coach is eager to turn their fortunes around.

"We'll be setting the expectations higher than just a winning season," Montecalvo said. "This coaching staff has been involved in 40 playoff games. From what I have seen, and with a little growth, we can make some noise and do it soon."

It is the offense that has made the most noise for the Big Macs over the past couple of years. They have scored 30 points or more in 7 of the last 20 games. With an experienced line and key returning skill players, the offense should be a strength again this year.

"Everyone loves to score points," junior quarterback Doug Rheam said.

Rheam will step under center for his second consecutive year. He played most of the 2002 season when starter Brandon Charriere went down with an injury. He will be protected by an experienced offensive line, which includes standout tackles Jeff Monaco (6-3, 265) and David Nackoul (5-11, 245). However, the major beneficiary of the offensive front will likely be senior running back Brendon Steele.

Steele managed a two-year total of over 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns. However, with the graduation of Albert Miles and Stefon Strothers (who combined for nearly 1,800 rushing yards last season), Steele figures to be option No. 1.

"Brendon epitomizes hard work," Montecalvo said. "He's like a sponge, a willing learner. He has explosiveness and is a tough guy. He's also an outstanding defensive player. He comes at you like radar. He loves to mix it up."

Steele figures to be a stopper at defensive back. Monaco will serve as the anchor of the defensive front. In between, Eric Taylor will be a major player in the linebacking corps. Taylor, who will also see time as a wide receiver, finished third in the WPIAL in the high jump last season. His ability to play large should make him effective on both sides of the ball.

"Eric can go get the football," Montecalvo said. "He's got great feet and outstanding tenacity. With some luck, he will go on to play college football at a high level."

The Big Macs hope to play at a high level this season. In the Quad West, they expect Upper St. Clair to once again challenge for the section. Montecalvo cited Trinity as another possible contender.

Given their new coach's history of success, just reaching the postseason will not be enough for Canon-McMillan.

"We want to stay in the playoffs for a while," Rheam said. "We should be able to keep up with every team. We will battle to the end and give every team a good game."
