A South Strabane Township man who jumped to his death from an overpass onto Interstate 70 had suffered depression since being injured in an auto accident 2 1 / 2 years ago, authorities said.
Kirk Cagnon Moninger, 18, of Lakeview Drive died late Tuesday after jumping from the Beau Street overpass into the path of a westbound passenger van in South Strabane. Washington County Coroner Tim Warco said the incident happened about 10:15 p.m. The van driver, Ronald Grimes of Maidenville, W.Va., wasn't injured, state police said.
Moninger was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:05 p.m. and Warco ruled the death a suicide.
Moninger missed school during rehabilitation from his accident. He didn't graduate with his class last year, but would have graduated from Trinity High School this spring and planned to attend college, his step-grandfather, Max Morgan, said.
Morgan described his grandson as "a fine athlete and an excellent student" before the accident, but afterward "he had a difficult time communicating with other students," Morgan said.
"It's just too bad," Morgan said of Moninger's death. "No one thought he would do something like this."
