State police at Greensburg are investigating a scam in which a person attempted to purchase a vehicle with a bogus check and have it shipped to Nigeria. Police said the incident began when the vehicle’s owner tried to sell it through the Internet. An unidentified person agreed to purchase the vehicle for $5,500 and asked the seller to ship it to Nigeria. The purchaser sent the seller a cashier’s check for $15,900, which allegedly was issued through National City Bank on Route 30 in Hempfield Township. The seller was instructed to cash the check and forward the difference to an address in Nigeria. Police said prior to the check’s being cashed, it was discovered that the check was counterfeit and that National City had not issued it. Police did not release the names of those involved. The investigation is continuing.
