Two people were injured Thursday night when a car plunged from a Downtown parking garage and became wedged between buildings in an alley.

City paramedics said a man and a woman were hurt about 9:40 p.m. when a sport utility vehicle plunged from the sixth level of the Alco Parking Corp.'s Sixth & Penn garage and landed in Charette Way.

Paramedics freed the couple from the Jeep Cherokee, and the man was taken to UPMC Mercy, Uptown, and the woman to Allegheny General Hospital in the North Side. Police said both were in critical condition.

"It came from the sixth level," said Pittsburgh police Lt. Robert Roth. "It looks like it hit a van and came through the guard rail. We don't know what happened up there."

Duaina Fletcher, 19, and Tymeisha Anderson, 18, two culinary arts students from Philadelphia, said they heard the crash.

"It was like this loud boom. We heard windows shatter. I came running out to see," Fletcher said. "There was this big hole up on the side of the building."

City accident reconstruction specialists and homicide detectives are investigating, Roth said.
