A resident of a Squirrel Hill condominium complex was found unconscious tonight by emergency crews who were called when carbon monoxide detectors in the building went off.

Residents were evacuated from the seven-unit building in the 5000 block of Fifth Avenue around 8 p.m. after emergency crews detected dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide.

Firefighters had to force their way into five units to ensure there were no occupants inside who were overcome by the deadly gas, according to a fire official.

A Port Authority bus was brought to the scene to keep residents out of the cold while crews from Equitable Gas determined that the leak was caused by a faulty furnace. Residents were expected to be allowed back in their homes tonight.

A 24-year-old woman was found unconscious in her bed, fire officials said. She had regained consciousness when she was taken by ambulance to UPMC Presbyterian in Oakland.
