Cardinal Francis George was discharged from a Chicago-area hospital Friday afternoon, a day after being hospitalized for tests.

Colleen Dolan, a spokeswoman for the archdiocese, told reporters that tests showed dizzy spells the cardinal suffered Thursday were not a sign of a stroke. She said additional tests were done on the cardinal's inner ear, which regulates balance, and results are expected next week.

George returned to Chicago on Wednesday night from an overseas trip.

Doctors at Loyola Hospital in Maywood advised the cardinal to rest over the weekend and said he might need more aggressive treatment for longstanding back problems.
