Fundraisers assist Bridgeville flood victims

More than two months after the flood swept through Bridgeville, area residents and organizations have been busy raising funds for victims of the June 20 incident that claimed the life of one woman and cause millions of dollars in damage to property.

The most recent event held was an all-day live music festival, featuring nine local bands, at Triangle Park. Bridgeville Borough Manager Lori Collins said about $1,600 was raised at the event.

One of the biggest fundraisers was executed by a group that had already done some of the hardest work assisting flood victims. Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department members spent several hours and days rescuing victims of the flood. They weren’t done once the water receded. Assistant Fire Chief Ray Costain said they immediately decided to begin raising funds. A comedy night held at the fire station raised about $22,000 for victims. Costain said all four comics donated their time. PJ’s Deli, Catering & Bakery donated all the food. Costain said all the money from the 278 tickets sold at $30 each goes to the victims because everything was donated.

At least one more fundraiser is on tap for Aug. 31. An all-day golf outing with live music is scheduled to be held at Hickory Heights Golf Club.

“After that, we’re going to look where we are and start distributing the money,” Collins said.

While some fundraising efforts may be ending, with the school year beginning new efforts may soon start. Mikaela Duckstein, public relations director at Chartiers Valley School District, said as the new school year has just begun, she anticipates various groups organizing fundraisers. The boys’ soccer team has already pitched in. Earlier this month, the team held their annual alumni game. The event raised $268 for relief. The money stemmed from donations and a 50/50 raffle. The raffle winner donated most of her winnings back to the fund.
