Sinkhole repairs cost Carlynton SD more than $26K
Repairs to the sinkhole near the entrance gate of Honus Wagner Field in Carnegie have cost the Carlynton School District more than $26,000.
When district officials investigated what was causing a small hole between the field and the corner of Carnegie Elementary School building, they unearthed a 20-foot opening.
Dennis McDade, director of maintenance and custodial services, said a broken storm water line from the field to a manhole outside the stadium gate was the cause.
”I was surprised nothing collapsed,” McDade told school board members during the Dec. 4 meeting.
The original line was routed from the field to the other side of the school building on Franklin Avenue. McDade said instead of digging up the ground along the building, the line was rerouted to Washington Avenue.
Repairs to fix the sinkhole was $9,840 and the work to put in a new line totaled $16,676.
