Do not ask us to attempt to imbue sense into the senseless in the aftermath of the LA Fitness carnage. It cannot be done.

Another societal misfit has ended his life. And in a fashion indigenous to such acutely disaffected people, this mote of a human being, convinced that society had miscounted his import, decided to also end the lives of the innocents he blamed for his failings.

And we are being generous in our characterization of George Sodini, 48, of Scott.

Mr. Sodini entered the Collier fitness club at midevening Tuesday, turned out the lights and opened fire with several guns. Twelve people were shot. Three died. Sodini then turned his cowardice on himself.

A personal blog, removed from the Internet after the massacre, not only documented his premeditation but his women-hating and racism-laced vaingloriousness. That it apparently raised no eyebrows beforehand only confirms his self-diagnosis.

We offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of Jody Billingsley, 38, of Mt. Lebanon, Elizabeth Gannon, 49, of Green Tree, and Heidi Overmier, 46, of Collier. And to the nine others wounded, we wish them a speedy recovery.

But words are a shallow comfort following such a horrific tragedy. We can only hope that time offers the consolation that the victims so sorely deserve.
