Devotees of a New York nightspot known as CBGB want the city to designate the rock and roll shrine as an official landmark, the New York Post said Friday.

"Project Save CBGB" wants the interior of the Bowery club, which is embroiled in a rent fight with its landlord, to get the official designation so it won't be demolished.

The group, which plans to petition the Landmark Preservation Commission for the designation, has been fighting the facility's landlord, a non-profit that houses homeless people and runs programs to help them, in city court over back rent and legal fees.

CBGB gained fame by nurturing such groups as the Ramones, Blondie and the Talking Heads.
