As part of our celebration leading up to the Daily Courier's 100th anniversary on Nov. 10, we are publishing highlights of headlining stories which have appeared in our paper during those past 100 years.
1935: Noted aviator Wiley Post and humorist Will Rogers were killed instantly yesterday when the engine of their monoplane suddenly misfired and their plane wheeled to earth, crashing on the bank of a small river 15 miles south of Point Barrow, Alaska.
1960: More than 80 carloads of completed Anchor Hocking Glass Corp. bottles returned to molten glass late Monday night when the company lost its largest warehouse facility at Dickerson Run to a fire which virtually demolished the old roundhouse of the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad. Anchor Hocking plant manager Harris Snell said damages will run between $200,000 and $300,000.
1965: "This is a memorable day in the long and proud history of Mount Pleasant and neighboring communities," said J. Albert Durgam, executive secretary of the New Jersey Hospital Plan (Blue Cross) and a native of Mount Pleasant, in his opening remarks to the 300 persons who attended the dedication of the $3,000,000 Frick Community Hospital Sunday afternoon.
1988: A group of Scottdale residents protested expansion of the Y&S landfill Monday afternoon at a meeting with East Huntingdon Township supervisors and state Department of Environmental Resources (DER) officials. Rimiro Corp. of Doylestown owns the dump, located near Alverton.
