Charleroi's First Annual Grande Community Gala and Recognition Awards Celebration was staged Saturday at the Elks Club.

Co-chairwoman Nikki Sheppick said the committee did not want an awards ceremony that was heavy with speeches. Instead, the committee wanted a fun-filled celebration, she said.

"Tonight we are celebrating all the good work these individuals and organizations have done for our community," Sheppick said.

More than 150 individuals, groups and organizations were honored.

Community service ranged from a few hours to many and services ranged from beautification projects to community development efforts.

Every effort was considered to be special, Sheppick said.

The event featured dancing and entertainment by the John Parker Band.

The Charleroi Area Historical Society set up a table featuring photographs and memorabilia.

U.S. Rep. Frank Mascara attended.

"It is a great event for the community, but it is also nice to renew old friendships," Mascara said. "I have seen people tonight I haven't seen for a long time. I am looking forward to having a good time with old friends."

A rendition of "Happy Birthday" was performed in honor of those who volunteer to serve the community.
