Center starts work on apartments
Several years ago the Board of Directors of the Center in the Woods identified a need for senior apartments on the campus of their senior center on Route 88 in California. Mary Hart, executive director, stated that many of the participants at the center told her they were moving in “the apartments” even before they were planned.
The Center in the Woods engaged Presbyterian SeniorCare as a planning partner in the housing development. Together, they completed the market analysis and architectural planning for the building, which will be physically attached to the Center in the Woods by an enclosed walkway.
Funding was finalized this fall for the $4 million project. Sources include The Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, The National Equity Fund, Washington County Redevelopment Authority, The Federal Home Loan Bank and an anonymous western Pennsylvania foundation.
Project groundbreaking Monday celebrated a final step in this process to develop this retirement option. Jim Pieffer, senior vice president of Presbyterian SeniorCare, noted that the combination of the senior center and its quality services and programs, a building designed to meet the changing needs of seniors and the opportunities of a college community will serve the residents of The Oaks for many years to come.
This first phase of the development is a 40-unit apartment building for low and moderate- income seniors with annual incomes less than $19,140 per year for an individual or $21,840 for two persons. A planned second phase is a 24-unit market rate addition.
All units will be exclusively for seniors (over 62 years of age). There is a waiting list for each phase and information may be obtained by calling the Center in the Woods at (724) 938-3554 or Presbyterian SeniorCare (412) 826-6071.
