MANOR -- As the most recent military veterans begin returning home from their tours of duty in Iraq, a local legislator decided to shift gears today and honor veterans of a different era.

Jeff Pyle, R-60th, is hosting a ceremony this afternoon to honor more than 400 World War II veterans from Armstrong and Indiana counties at the Lenape Heights Golf Course.

"These men, according to statistics, are passing away at an alarming rate," Pyle said. "I just felt it was a good time to let them know how important they are to us and how important their role was in the freedoms we have today."

Pyle said many of the veterans are planning to attend the event wearing their uniforms and there will be a large display of World War II memorabilia.

The veterans will receive commemorative medallions and certificates during the ceremony.

Other guests at today's event will be state Sen. Don White, R-41st; Jason Davidek of U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum's office; the Rev.E.V. Stratton; retired Marine Corps Col. James Stiffler; retired Brigidier Gen. John B. McCue and the Armstrong County Honor Guard. The Kittanning Firemen's Band will perform..
