Charleroi Classic tips off tonight

The Charleroi Federal Classic opens tonight with a possible WPIAL Class A playoff matchup.

California Area (6-2) faces Bentworth (6-1) in the opening game at 6:30 p.m. in a battle of section leaders.

The Trojans haven't lost to a Class A team this season and are led by 6-6 senior Travis Van Olst, 5-7 senior Donte Valentino and 6-1 junior Ben Carson.

Bentworth is riding a five-game winning streak and has lost only at Class AA Chartiers-Houston.

The Bearcats are led by the Kennedy twins, Jon and Joe who are the sons of coach Bob Kennedy.

Jon Kennedy, a 6-4 senior, is a 1,000 point scorer.

In today's other contest, Charleroi Area (4-6) plays Frazier (1-7) at 8 p.m.

The Cougars beat the Commodores, 54-43, in the consolation game of the Belle Vernon Area Tip-Off tourney.

Belle Vernon Area (6-3) will play the California-Bentworth winner Thursday at 6:30 p.m. followed by Southmoreland (2-8) against the Charleroi-Frazier winner at 8 p.m.

Eleswhere, Yough (6-4) plays Perry Traditional Academy (5-4) at 6 p.m. in the West Mifflin tourney, followed by the host Titans (3-6) gainst Clairton (3-5) at 8 p.m.
