Charleroi-McGuffey moved to Ringgold due to weather

Charleroi and Monessen both have big conference games scheduled at home tonight.

The once-beaten Cougars, however, won't be facing twice-beaten McGuffey at Charleroi Stadium in the Class AA Interstate Conference as slated.

Charleroi's grass field took a beating in last week's contest with Waynesburg and this week's inclement weather made the field unplayable.

As a result, Charleroi Athletic Director Bill Wiltz had to look for another site, preferably one with artificial turf.

After getting turned down by California University, Wiltz got the green light at Ringgold.

As a result, the Cougars will face the Highlanders at 7:30 p.m. at Joe Montana Stadium.

Playing on the Rams' field won't be a first for the Cougars.

In 1998, Charleroi was a 24-7 loser there to Washington in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Class AA playoffs.

Ironically, the Charleroi fullback that season was the Cougars' third-year coach, Luke Mollis.

The Cougars are coming off a 14-7 victory over the Raiders which upped their winning streak to five, their longest since 2004.

Charleroi sophomore Quentin Briggs needs 83 yards to reach 1,000 for the second straight year.

McGuffey had a four-game winning streak snapped in a 22-8 loss at once-beaten Jeannette.

The Highlanders' other defeat was at unbeaten Mt. Pleasant, 17-6, in the opener.

Front-running Monessen, meanwhile, takes a four-game winning streak into its Tri-County South feature with Jefferson-Morgan, which shares second place with California and Beth-Center. The latter two teams collide at Beth-Center.

The Greyhouds' defense has allowed only six touchdowns in four conference games.

The Rockets' only loss was at Beth-Center, 44-13, three weeks ago.

Jeff-Morgan has averaged 35 points in its five wins.

The Rockets, however, won't have Hans Lubich, the team's leading rusher and receiver who was injured in last week's 33-0 romp over West Greene.
