Bruno Pappasergi may have stepped down as Charleroi High’s baseball coach.

But the Cougars won’t have a new look on their staff when the scholastic spring season gets under way Monday.

Pappasergi’s successor will be Brian Corrin, who served as the Cougars’ pitching coach for 17 years.

A 1979 Charleroi High graduate, Corrin pitched for the Cougars and later was a starter and reliever at Slippery Rock University.

Corrin, 47, had the distinction of being the school’s first junior varsity coach in 1990 when Fran Celaschi was guiding the Cougars.

Three years later, Celaschi had retired and was replaced by Pappasergi.

“Back in 1990 we had so many players we had to go with two teams,” recalled Corrin. “We had close to 50 players and I had 22 with the JVs.”

Nearly two decades later, the numbers have dropped.

“We’ve been struggling in the youth programs, which have become expensive,” said Corrin. “Right now we have 26 players signed up.”

Meanwhile, Corrin’s assistants will be Pappasergi and Luke Mollis, the Cougars’ football coach.

Corrin will get $2,926 with Pappasergi’s salary at $2,247 and Mollis at $984.

The Cougars are coming off a 10-5 showing and shared the Class AA Section 2 title with Brownsville and Washington at 9-3.

Charleroi will have one new section rival in Frazier. The Commodores are moving up a class and replace Beth-Center, which dropped down to Class A.

The Cougars’ Section 2 opener is April 3 in Perryopolis against Frazier.

Add Charleroi: Beth Noble has been hired as the Lady Cougars’ new softball coach and will be assisted by Belle Vernon Area graduate Dena Mornak with Trey Tillman middle school coach.

Noble will receive $2,600 with Mornak getting $1,400 and Tillman $1,100.

Joe Caruso will be back for his 19th year as the Cougars’ track coach at a salary of $4,298. Martin Matyas is the first assistant at a salary of $2,575 with Keith Boord ($2,166) and Nick Mahalko ($1,565) the other aides.
