Charleroi watches title slip away

Charleroi American Legion baseball manager Luke Mollis looked back today on one of the most frustrating defeats in his young career. It came Sunday at Uniontown when Charleroi dropped a 10-9 decision in 10 innings with the Fayette League regular season title on the line. "We had our opportunities," said Mollis. "We had so many chances but just couldn't put it away." He was referring especially to the ninth inning. Charleroi (13-3) took an 8-7 lead into the ninth inning when it loaded the bases with no out on walks to Nathan Helster and Kyle Fisher-Law around an error on Kris Marchewka's grounder. Charleroi, however, failed to score as Jon Kendra and Ricky Bartman both struck out and Brendan Costantino flied to center. Uniontown (18-3) loaded the bases in the ninth with out and scored the tying run when catcher Sam Manner's throw to first on an inning-ending double play went into right field. Charleroi went ahead in the 10th when Machewka's two-out single drove in Mario Fragello, who walked and stole second. John Boskovich's sacrifice fly drove in the winning run after Joe Hoover walked with the bases loaded to tie the game. Walks to Jimmy Blosser and Nathan Fike around Cory Sawka's single started the rally off Marchewka. "It didn't help that we had four starters missing and we had a lot of guys out of position," said Mollis. Charleroi will host California Wednesday before opening the playoffs Friday.
