How big was Mia Woytovich's night Monday against Washington in a Section 5 AA contest?

Well, for starters she scored 21 points in the second half en route to a career-high 27 points.

During that second half onslaught, the senior guard hit a deep three-pointer that put her over 1,000 points for her career.

And, more important, her monster effort propelled the Lady Cougars (15-3, 6-2) to a huge win over Washington (9-5, 6-2).

“I was extremely nervous,” said Woytovich, who came into the contest needing 17 points to become the seventh girls' player in the school's history to hit 1,000 points. “But I knew we had to come out and get the ‘W.' I wasn't even thinking about my 1,000 the whole time.”

Her historic shot came with 6:54 to play in the game on a trey from the top of the key that gave Charleroi a 35-29 lead.

“I shot that three and I knew it was in as soon as I let it go,” she said.

The shot touched off a celebration among her teammates and coaches. Woytovich broke down and sobbed as she was mobbed on the court.

“This has been a long journey since my freshman year. And I couldn't have done it without my team,” she said. “It was a whole team effort. I'm so proud that we got the win and my 1,000 points.”

Charleroi outscored the Lady Prexies 18-9 in the third quarter to turn a 18-13 deficit into a 31-27 lead and Woytovich had nine points in the period.

Charleroi never trailed after that.

“It was a big win for us,” said Charleroi coach Joe Grodz. “I'm proud of our girls. They stuck with it and fought back in the second half and showed resiliency.

“And Mia played a helluva game. She was just in another zone in the second half. She was unstoppable.”

Woytovich grabbed 14 rebounds and had five assists and five steals to go with her 27-point effort.

Teammate Lynsey Wright grabbed 12 rebounds.

Washington got nine points from Taylor Ellis, all on three-pointers in the first half.

Grodz said it was fitting that Woytovich's teammates celebrated with her on the floor when she reached the plateau.

“Mia scored 1,000 points, but her teammates all played a big role in it,” Grodz said. “They worked hard for her all year to help her get her points. It's a very unselfish group.”

Ringgold 50, Waynesburg 31

The Lady Rams (8-8, 3-5) won in Section 4-AAA as Bailey Cooper tallied 14 points, Marlena Schmidt 13 and Kara Foster 11.

Ringgold outscored Waynesburg (2-12, 0-8) 18-4 in the second half to turn a 12-10 lead into a 30-14 advantage.

Elizabeth Forward 58, West Mifflin 56

The Lady Warriors (13-1, 7-0) stayed perfect in Section 4-AAA, but not without surviving a scare from the Lady Titans (11-3, 6-2).

EF trailed 40-38 going into the fourth quarter as West Mifflin got a game-high 22 points from Ciara Patterson.

EF was led by Allison Pastore with 17 points, Abigail Sporio with 14 and Kylie Owoc with 10.
