Steve Holeczy has no immediate plans to play college basketball, but the Cheswick Christian Academy senior does have an idea about what he wants to do for a career.
"I don't know, maybe something with numbers," he said.
Holeczy became associated with one number this week -- 15. That's how many 3-pointers the 5-foot-10 guard has made in a row over the past three games.
He's hit from the top of the key, both corners, from several feet outside the arc and with players in his face.
"It's getting to the point where everyone is expecting it to go in," Cheswick coach Todd Rosio said. "There was a shot the other night when I said, 'Here goes the streak.' We were down with six minutes left and were at the point where we needed to jack up threes. Steve split two guys, and did this double-clutch thing. Swish!
"He has crossed the line into some special territory."
The streak started Jan. 8 when Holeczy, the A-K Valley's leading scorer (26.5 ppg) hit a late three against Beaver County Christian at Penn State Beaver.
Little did he know, that shot would spark a feat that may never be matched at the school.
Holeczy went 7 for 7 from beyond the arc in consecutive games at Jefferson County on Saturday.
On Monday, he repeated the feat by making all seven of his threes against Wilson Christian at Penn State New Kensington.
"I've shot threes before, but have never had any kind of streak like that," Holeczy said. "It's been pretty wild."
The National Federation of High Schools does not recognize a record for consecutive 3-pointers, probably because many teams do not keep track of shot attempts.
But Holeczy's streak can be compared to other leagues.
The NBA record, for instance, is held by two players, Brent Price and Terry Mills, both of whom made 13 in a row in 1996. Price's feat occurred while he was playing for the Washington Bullets from Jan. 15-19. Mills tied the mark with the Detroit Pistons from Dec. 4-7.
The NCAA Division I record is 15 by Todd Leslie of Northwestern; the Division II mark of 18 consecutive threes is held by Dan Drews of Le Moyne.
The national high school record for threes in one game is 24 by Taurean Moy of Memphis Booker T. Washington of Tennessee. Moy made 24-of-44 attempts against Memphis Manassas in 2000.
And talk about dead-eye shooting for Holeczy. He even lost a contact lens for a brief time during Monday's game, in which he scored 27 points in a 51-46 loss.
"One thing about Steve is that he is very modest," said Cheryl Holeczy, Steve's mother. "He has really been on the last couple games. It's been fun to watch."
Holeczy's two older brothers, Jake and Jesse, also played at Cheswick Christian. The boys have a portable hoop behind their house, but it's set up on their deck because they live on a hillside in Creighton.
Holeczy has had only one game where he did not score in double figures. He has helped the Chargers to a 9-5 record (2-3 Southwest Christian Athletic Conference).
Rosio said he hasn't talked with Holeczy much about the streak.
"It's like a pitcher with a perfect game going," said Rosio, a former Cheswick guard whose career-best for threes in a game was six, but not consecutive.
For the season, Holeczy has hit 37-of-79 3-pointers in 14 games for the Chargers -- that's 46.8 percent.
"In the Jefferson County game Saturday, I made two in a row and I was happy about it," Holeczy said. "Then I made the third and fourth and started to feel funny. It was great to keep it going."
Cheswick plays Jefferson County again 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Penn State New Kensington.
"If I miss it's no big deal," Holeczy said. "At least I can say I made 15 straight. And I am fine with that."
