Point Park University permanently closed its Children’s School on June 30, due to space constraints and a need to focus on educating college students, Point Park spokeswoman Mary Ellen Solomon said on Friday.
The school, which opened in the 1960s after Point Park was founded, offered an opportunity for students to integrate their work into their studies, she said. That opportunity declined in recent years, however, as students began seeking early-childhood education experiences in school districts and private facilities in other areas, she said.
Solomon said the Children’s School was one of the first facilities accredited in 1987 by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. The university will help parents find alternative programs for their children and provide career transition assistance for the 32 employees who lost their jobs, she said.
