China has executed a man dubbed the "kindergarten killer," convicted of murdering a teacher and a 5-year-old boy during a school break-in in Beijing last year.

The convict, 31-year-old Fu Hegong, was executed Tuesday in Beijing, Xinhua news agency reported.

Fu reportedly broke into the boarding school at night to rob it, but was confronted by the teacher on duty. He was convicted of raping her before smothering her with a quilt, and beating to death a 5-year-old boy who was awakened by the noise.

During his trial Fu confessed to 16 other crimes including three murders, Xinhua reported.

The school murder received prominent coverage in Chinese media, as it came amid a spate of unrelated attacks on kindergartens and daycare centers last year. As a result, all schools were ordered to hire guards and tighten security measures.
