The sewage treatment plant along Harrison Street in Glassport was evacuated on Wednesday afternoon after a chlorine leak was detected, according to a borough official.
Allegheny County officials announced the leak at about 2:30 p.m. and a county hazardous materials response team and emergency medical services units were dispatched to the scene along with fire departments from Glassport, Dravosburg and Jefferson.
The leak occurred when plant workers were changing a chlorine tank and encountered problems with the new tank, said Glassport manager John DeSue.
The leak was quickly stopped and the building was ventilated, DeSue said. No injuries were reported.
